Resident Artist David Horvitz is an artist whose conceptual and poetic works often unfold as fleeting gestures, sometimes existing only in the moment. His practice moves between language, ecology, and social exchange, creating situations that blur the boundaries between art and life. In Los Angeles, he cultivates a garden on vacant land built from seafood waste and planted with hundreds of native species, forming a living artwork that supports insects, pollinators, and birds. This site functions as both an ecological intervention and a social space, where cycles of decay and growth become material. Horvitz’s work frequently engages participation, trust, and the unseen connections between people and environments.
At Art Farm, he has been looking closely at the Sonoma landscape, using it as a site of reflection and memory. His attention turns toward his grandmother and her family, Japanese farmers who once lived and worked in this region before the war disrupted their lives. This history quietly informs his practice, shaping how he observes land, labor, and continuity. He does not seek to resolve these histories, but to sit with them, to look into them with curiosity and care. Through subtle actions and poetic framing, Horvitz’s work opens space for attention, memory, and the fragile conditions that allow something, whether a garden, a story, or a moment, to flourish.
David can’t help but immerse you in his ever-unfolding artistic practice. Join us for a walk through David’s work and check out what he’s been up to here - all we know is that it will involve mudballs, ravens, sea snail shells, and his grandmother.
